People with care and support needs
The following categories of people is not exhaustive but incorporates the main groups discussed within the Care Act 2014, An adult who –
- is elderly and frail due to ill health, physical disability or cognitive impairment
- has a learning disability
- has a physical disability or sensory impairment
- has mental health needs, including dementia or a personality disorder
- has long term illness/condition
- misuses substances or alcohol
‘Care & Support’ needs?
The Care Act 2014 defines Care & Support needs in this context as follows, the adult may have Care & Support needs if –
a. The adults needs arise from or are related to a physical or mental impairment or illness
b. as a result of the adults needs the adult is unable to achieve two or more of the outcomes below and
c. as a consequence there is or likely to be a significant impact on the adults wellbeing
- Managing and maintaining nutrition
- Maintaining personal hygiene
- Managing toilet needs
- Being appropriately clothed
- Maintaining a habitable home environment
- Being able to make use of the home safely
- Developing and maintaining family or other personal relationships
- Accessing and engaging in work, training, education or volunteering
- Making use of necessary facilities or services in the local community including public transport and recreational facilities or services
- Carrying out any caring responsibilities the adult has for a child
