The Volunteen programme aims to support all our young people 11 – 25 years old to increase their employability skills by engaging them in accessible and appropriate social action.  The Reaching Communities funding will enable us to reach many more young people and provide one to one assistance for those young people who need additional support.  Volunteen will work in partnership with at least 15 of our Secondary Schools, as well as a number of other services, to ensure that all young people have the chance to benefit from volunteering in opportunities they are interested in, thereby gaining recognition and accreditation for their volunteering work, as well as increasing their confidence, skills and knowledge, whilst meeting new people and participating in new, enjoyable experiences.

With the additional funding of £296,541 from Reaching Communities, the Volunteen project will be able to deliver the following services to increase the number of young volunteers in East Riding and enable them to enhance their future employability prospects.  There will be a new buddy scheme to offer more support to disabled young people and those with additional needs, including mental health issues; a specialist worker who will provide one to one support to young people who have experienced a range of difficulties in their life and a Youth Volunteer Champion Co-ordinator, who will work closely with the secondary schools and other large youth organisations to increase peer support for youth volunteering from year 7 upwards.

Reaching Communities has given us the additional capacity and resources needed to engage more communities, services and a wide range of professionals working with the many diverse groups of young people, to ensure that there is equal access to appropriate volunteering opportunities and the associated benefits, which will improve all our young people’s future well-being and employability prospects within the East Riding of Yorkshire.
